Acne Scars
What It Is
As a result of inflamed blemishes caused by clogged pores, acne scars are often left behind when the follicle wall in the skin is broken. Shallow wounds are normally quite minor and will heal in a short period of time. However, deeper lesions can be created if the pore wall is broken and infected substances spill out into tissue surrounding the area. When these lesions are created, the skin will attempt to repair it by forming new collagen fibers. Usually, the repaired skin is not as smooth as the original skin. There are 2 main types of acne scarring that you may experience:
- Keloid/Hypertrophic Scarring: When the body produces too much collagen in an attempt to repair the acne wound, a buildup of raised tissue will appear on the surface of the skin.
- Depressed/Atrophic Scarring: There are 2 types of atrophic scarring that may occur when there is a loss of tissue. “Icepick” scars are typically very small, visible holes in the skin. “Boxcar” scars look similar to chickenpox scars, and are usually round in shape with sharp angled sides.

How It’s Treated
Sciton Laser (Profractional)
The Profractional Sciton laser treatment works by using lasers to create microscopic channels on the surface of the skin. This is extremely effective in the treatment of acne scars because the natural production of collagen in the skin will be stimulated, which will smooth out your scarring and provide you with a smooth, clear, and glowing complexion. The laser will create microchannels to release the deep tethers that result in the appearance of the deep, pitted acne scars. With a series of 3 to 4 treatments, you will see dramatic changes in your skin tone and texture.
Sciton MicroLaserPeel
The precise laser head of the Sciton MicroLaser Peel is one of the most effective ways to target and treat acne scarring and hyperpigmentation. It works by vapourizing the layers of the skin through an evaporation process, which occurs due to the high percentage of water present in the epidermis. The laser’s vapourizing action will rejuvenate and resurface the skin in as quickly as 30 minutes.
Silk Peel
The SilkPeel microdermabrasion treatment is highly effective in the treatment of acne scars because it exfoliates away the outer layers of the skin that house old and dead skin cells, which will promote younger, healthier skin to come through. Furthermore, it delivers topical treatments to the skin in one go. At The Centre For Dermatology, we can help improve your facial complexion with this non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime and quick procedure time.
Chemical Peel
Chemical peels are a non-invasive, safe treatment option to treat and reduce the appearance of scars from acne breakouts. They are able to provide effective results with virtually no down time and have been performed safely for many years. When you undergo this treatment, a solution with a mix of glycolic acid, salicylic acid or retinoic acid will be applied to the skin depending on your desired results. This will cause the skin cells to separate and will peel the top layer of the skin off, which will allow for skin rejuvenation as new skin cells emerge.
