ALA / Blue Light / Photodynamic
Therapy
For the treatment of ACNE and Sun damage. Levulan or ALA (amino
levulinic acid) is a naturally occurring compound in humans. It is a precursor for the synthesis of hemoglobin – the
carrier of oxygen in our blood. When applied onto the skin, ALA gets attracted to abnormal oil glands
and to abnormal sun damaged cells in the skin.
Once activated by a blue light source (400-420 nm) the ALA molecule
gets activated and destroys abnormal oil glands and abnormal skin cells. In this way, acne can be readily
treated in teens as aggressively as with oral antibiotics or even Accutane without the potential internal
side effects of organ toxicity. Similarly, in adults, sun damage can be treated with the added benefit
of improved skin texture, colour, and the removal of fine lines. Side effects are minimal. Typically
1-3 days of redness and peeling occur after the procedure. 3-6 sessions may be necessary on a monthly
basis.
