Temporary Fillers
This group of agents are largely composed of hyaluronic acid (HA)
based dermal fillers. The most
abundant sites for HA in the body is in our skin and joints. As we age, arthritis develops due to
a decrease in HA in the joint space. Similarly, HA also decreases in the skin, resulting in wrinkles and
the thinning of our lips. HA based fillers (Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm and Teosyal) are molecules
that will last approximately 4 – 12 months depending on their site of injection. These molecules
are very safe and easy to administer with a minimal side effect profile.
Semi-permanent Fillers
This group of molecules will last 1 – 2 years. The most popular agents in this group used
by Dr. Raman and his associates is Radiesse (calcium hydroxyapatite). Radiesse is a radioopaque material
(can be seen by xray) that is similar to crushed bone. It is very soft and pliable and makes an excellent
filler primarily for nasal reshaping and chin augmentation.
Permanent Fillers
This group of fillers will last permanently. The only permanent
filler available in Canada is Artesense (formerly Artecoll). It is made up of microspheres of polymethy
methacrylate (PMMA) suspended in collagen. It can be injected into desired area quickly and virtually painlessly.
A skin test is necessary 1 month prior to using Artesense. The microspheres encourage an increase in your
own natural collagen. Thus, the beautiful effects are more enduring than other injectables.
Lip Enhancement
Lip enhancement is not only for making your lips look fuller. This simple, 10 minute procedure is
performed with a simple dental block and is a painless way to enhance the most important part of your face. Not
only can fine lips be made larger, lip asymmetry, smoker’s lines and down-turned lip corners can
all be corrected with no discomfort. The only significant side effects are possible swelling and possible
bruising, both of which are temporary. With only 1 session, lip enhancement procedures can last up to 1
year.
